چکیده

In Kohn–Sham density functional theory, only the highest occupied eigenvalue has a rigorous physical meaning, viz., it is the negative of the lowest ionization energy. Here, we demonstrate that for finite systems, the unoccupied true Ž . Kohn–Sham eigenvalues as opposed to the those obtained from the commonly used approximate density functionals are also meaningful in that good approximations to excitation energies can be obtained from them. We argue that the explanation for this observed behavior is that, at large distances, the Kohn–Sham orbitals and the quasiparticle amplitudes satisfy the same equation to order 1rr . q 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Excitation energies from density functional perturbation theory

We consider two perturbative schemes to calculate excitation energies, each employing the Kohn– Sham Hamiltonian as the unperturbed system. Using accurate exchange-correlation potentials generated from essentially exact densities and their exchange components determined by a recently proposed method, we evaluate energy differences between the ground state and excited states in first-order pertu...

A self-interaction-free local hybrid functional: accurate binding energies vis-à-vis accurate ionization potentials from Kohn-Sham eigenvalues.

We present and test a new approximation for the exchange-correlation (xc) energy of Kohn-Sham density functional theory. It combines exact exchange with a compatible non-local correlation functional. The functional is by construction free of one-electron self-interaction, respects constraints derived from uniform coordinate scaling, and has the correct asymptotic behavior of the xc energy densi...

Kohn-Sham perturbation theory: simple solution to variational instability of second order correlation energy functional.

The orbital-dependent correlation energy functional resulting from second order Kohn-Sham perturbation theory leads to atomic correlation potentials with correct shell structure and asymptotic behavior. The absolute magnitude of the exact correlation potential, however, is greatly overestimated. In addition, this functional is variationally instable, which shows up for systems with nearly degen...

Relationship between singlet–triplet excitation energies and the Kohn–Sham orbitals obtained with potentials that exhibit a wrong asymptotic behavior

A linear relationship was found between the singlet–triplet excitation energy and the energy difference presented by the Kohn–Sham frontier molecular orbitals, independently of the used exchange-correlation functional and of the basis set functions quality. The relationship was explored in three different situations: (a) when the number of carbons is increased in an all-trans acetylene family; ...

Calculating excited state properties using Kohn-Sham density functional theory.

The accuracy of excited states calculated with Kohn-Sham density functional theory using the maximum overlap method has been assessed for the calculation of adiabatic excitation energies, excited state structures, and excited state harmonic and anharmonic vibrational frequencies for open-shell singlet excited states. The computed Kohn-Sham adiabatic excitation energies are improved significantl...
